Men fight and lose the battle, and the thing that they fought for comes about in spite of their defeat, and when it comes turns out not to be what they meant, and other men have to fight for what they meant under another name. (William Morris - A Dream of John Ball)

UNISON and the EU Referendum

https://www.unison.org.uk/our-campaigns/eu-referendum-23-june/

UNISON members having come out in favour of remaining in the European Union by a convincing majority, the Union has launched its campaign to inform members of UNISON policy.

Activists need to pay close attention to the very strict legal framework within which UNISON has to operate - which means that no expenditure on referendum campaigning can be incurred except from the Centre.

Unusually, on this occasion, the control freak culture of our trade union bureaucracy is warranted, since (unlike in a Parliamentary or local election) even the cost of internal communication counts towards the strict expenditure limit which UNISON must not exceed.

That said, branches will receive centrally produced campaign materials which we need to distribute to members to ensure the maximum turnout in the referendum. For all its many flaws, the EU underpins a number of critically important employment rights without which our working lives would be even worse.
